Penny Rug: Happy Easter
Some weeks ago I was asked by a stitcher from AK if I was interested to design a ‘Penny Rug’
suitable for machine embroidery. After some research and reading on the history about such
an item I was kind of ‘hooked’ and replied that I would give it a try. And the more I read about
them - the more images I saw - the more the urge was there to start one soon and it ended
up in this project - all done in the 5x7 hoop - on felt over WSS (Vilene).
If you go and Google the word ‘Penny Rug’ you will find many images and interesting pages
with information about how they originate and what the idea was. This goes back to the 19th
century where woman turned scraps of woolen fabric from old garments into felt and created round
‘pennies’ from different layers and colors of this felt - held together and same time embellished with
some kind of decorative embroidery - and sometimes simple shapes of an applique-kind nature
were added to create useful items like rugs or mats - .
So - the word is ‘prim’ or ‘naive’ - but considering that they only had their very 2 hands and a needle
to create these rather interesting items gives me a feeling of great respect.
The pennies are done with 4 in 1 hooping, then there is a centre circle and 4 inner sections. The pennies
are arranged around the assembled inner part and sewn in place with a few zig-zag stitches. That is
basically it. Inner parts and circle have applique detail as well as embroidery and also text.
A well texted and illustrated PDF is supplied with the file.
Finished project is 41 cm in dia (16.4 inch)
